Full Working Rights
Permanent Resident (PR) Visa entitles the Visa holders full working rights. One can work for any business in any occupation. But, working in the Public Service or Armed forces is strictly restricted to the Australian Citizens. They can however become part of trade unions and can claim worker’s compensation.
Indefinite Living Rights
As a permanent resident, you are entitled to live indefinitely in Australia. However, initially the permanent visa is given for a period of five years and is renewable from either outside Australia or from within the country.
As a permanent resident you are eligible to enroll for social security payments through CentreLink, like family tax benefit and childcare subsidy. As with most other social security benefits, there is a two years waiting before one gets entitled to receive social security benefits like sickness, unemployment and student benefits that are offered by Australia’s Social Security Department.
An important benefit that the permanent residents enjoy is the health care entitlement. As a permanent resident of Australia, you are eligible for the health insurance scheme run by the government called Medicare. A Medicare card is issued which entitles the holder to receive free treatment at a public hospital, get consultation through local General practitioner and buy subsidized medicine.
You are eligible to apply for Australian Citizenship after four years of stay as a Permanent Resident. Children of permanent residents who are born in Australia are deemed Australian citizens by birth. This is one great advantage because they subsequently enjoy the maximum benefits in the field of education and health care from day one.
Job Service Agency (JSA) Facility
As a permanent resident you are enrolled with the Job Service Agents (JSA) attached to Centrelink wherein you are provided the support to do your job search, are presented with opportunities to upgrade your skills and eligible job vacancies as shared by your case manager from time to time. You can use the facilities like Wi-Fi internet, land phone, photocopier which are available at the JSA.
Education subsidy under various state schemes is available to PR visa holders. School education is highly subsidized almost free, domestic fees apply for University Programs and post citizenship one can access the Higher Education Loans Program (HELP) and the associated discounts for up-front payments. However state run programs like Skills Victoria which administer Certificate and Diploma Level programs are open to Permanent Residents.
Privilege to Sponsor Relatives
Permanent residents can also sponsor their relatives.However this is possible only after the applicant meets certain residence and support assurance pre-requisites.
First Home Owner Grant
As a PR Visa holder you get entitles to the first Home Owner Grant (FHOG)scheme , wherein you will receive a $7,000 incentive and waiver of stamp duty, when you buy first home in Australia. Furthermore, the restrictions of the Foreign Investment Review Board imposed on purchase of residential property no longer apply (you are now no longer officially considered a foreigner)
Once you become Australian Permanent Resident, your credit rating improves tremendously. You will be in a better position for approval of most loans including but not limited to home loans, car loans, personal loans, credit cards and so on.
